10 Cool Things To Know About Your Body

· Uncategorized

1. That Tingly Feeling

If your hand or arm falls asleep, the best thing to do is rock your head from side to side. Pins and needles in your arms or hands are often due to the bundle of nerves in your neck being compressed, and rocking your head should rid you painlessly of the tingly feeling in less than a minute.

2. Stuffy Nose Solution

Want a quick, easy way to relieve sinus pressure? Alternate between pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth and pressing on your upper nose (between your eyebrows) with one finger. This causes the bone which connects your nose to the roof of your mouth to rock back and forth and loosen congestion. After about 20 seconds of this your sinuses should start to clear out.

3. Tickle in Your Throat

Got a itch in your throat? Scratch your ear! Seriously! ”When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm. This spasm relieves the tickle.” says Scott Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose, and throat specialty center in Gibbsboro, New Jersey.

4. No More Side Cramps While Running

When we run, most of us exhale as our right foot hits the ground. This puts downward pressure on your liver (it’s on your right side in case you didn’t know) which tugs on your diaphragm, giving you a cramp in your side. To get rid of those cramps once and for all, just exhale while your LEFT foot hits the ground!

5. No Place to Pee?

If you have to go the bathroom and you have no place to go, the solution is simple: just think about sex! It preoccupies your brain so you don’t feel any discomfort.

6. See How Your Body Protects Itself (Also Cool Party Trick)

Tell someone to hold one arm straight out to the side, palm facing down, and tell them to stay in that position. Push down on their wrist with two fingers. They will resist and barely move at all. Now, put something that’s a few inches tall under one of their feet (a book or a few magazines will do the trick), and press their wrist again. This time, their arm will cave in like a collapsing tent. This is because you’ve misaligned their hips and offset their spine. When your brain senses that your spine is vulnerable, it no longer lets you resist.

7. Cure For A Toothache

Rub ice on the back of your hand on the V-shaped webbed area between your thumb and pointer finger. The nerve paths at the base of that V stimulates a part of your brain that blocks pain signals from your face and hands, reducing your tooth pain by up to 50%.

8. Know Which Ear To Hear With

Your right ear is better at following rapid rhythms of speech, and your left ear is better at picking up music tones. So, if you’re having trouble hearing what someone is saying, lean in with your right ear and if you’re trying to hear some very low music lean in with your left!

9. Hold Your Breath Longer Underwater

That desperate feeling for air you get when you’re underwater is not from lack of oxygen, but from a buildup of carbon dioxide making your blood acidic, which tells your brain that something is wrong. If you want to be able to hold your breath longer, make yuoself hyperventilate a little before jumping in, by taking several quick, short breaths. Jonathan Armbuster, Ph.D., from Auburn University states, “When you hyperventilate, the influx of oxygen lowers blood acidity. This tricks your brain into thinking it has more oxygen.” This little trick should buy you up to 10 extra seconds of underwater swimming.

10. Stop a Nosebleed Fast

Put cotton on your upper gums, right behind the small dent below your nose, then press against it- hard. Doctor Peter Desmarais, an ear nose and throat specialist , states that, . “Most bleeds come from the front of the septum, the cartilage wall that divides the nose. Pressing here helps stop them.”
